To me, Friday nights are sacred. A hallowed time of unwinding and minimal effort is mandated, and this past Friday night was no different. Despite my commitment to personal laziness, I decided to put on clothes meant for the general public and venture outside.  What could be worthy of both my attention and outside-of-the-house pants? The South Highlands Summer Market, a new market taking place on Friday evenings, 5-9 p.m., now through Aug. 8.

Located in the parking lot of Mall St. Vincent, the South Highlands Summer Market is a gem of the Highland neighborhood and a fun way to spend your time and money. One large tent holds a bounty of local treats to sample and peruse at your leisure. There are some favorites from the Shreveport Farmers’ Marketsuch as Crawford Farms out of Timpson, Texas, my go-to veggie vendor, and Hoover’s Seasonal Produce, a purveyor of delicious ground nut butters. Other food products available included Texas peaches, homemade jams and Vidalia “super sweet” corn – altogether enough variety to interest any cook looking for weekend inspiration.

If you are looking to fill your belly immediately, a delicious dinner could be found at Taqueria La Michoacana with authentic Mexican cuisine or Wild Thing Custom Meats and their homemade boudin, pepper poppers, or burgers. Mustache Mike’s provided the perfect complement to dinner on a warm summer night with their brightly colored Italian ice. On this evening, Mike’s was having their inaugural outing and business looked to be good.

Venturing outside of the food offerings, shoppers can choose from items crafted by local artists including furniture, home décor, handmade soap, and the creative graphic prints of Toomasooba. All of the offerings of the market are accentuated by the presence of live music and ample seating, so it’s the perfect environment to relax either on your own or with friends. Though small, this market is a fun outing for those wanting to experience a farmers’ market without battling crowds.
